Are you scared to be hypnotised? Worried you’ll lose control and reveal all your secrets?
You’re not alone in this fear but there is really nothing to be afraid of.
Let me explain why hypnosis is nothing to be scared of and what it feels like to be in hypnosis.
Things to know if you’re scared to be hypnotised
The main thing to know about being hypnotised is that all hypnosis is self hypnosis.
This means that there’s only one person in the world that can ever hypnotise you – you!
Hypnotists don’t have magic powers. We don’t zap people with a hypnotic ray. All we do is guide you through a series of steps which helps you to achieve ta state of hypnosis.
Here’s a video from Marisa Peer, one of the world’s leading hypnotherapist. She talks about hypnotherapy not being able to make you do anything you don’t want to and some of the misconceptions people have.
You are always in control
A common misconception is that hypnotists are in control of the person they have hypnotised.
This is wrong for two reasons:
- You hypnotised yourself, I didn’t do it
- I can’t make you do anything you don’t want to
That’s right. No hypnotist can ever MAKE you do anything.
You don’t turn into an idiot when in hypnosis. If I tell you to send me all your money or to go an lie down in the road until you get run over than you just wouldn’t do it. It doesn’t work.
I recommend you read my page on how hypnosis works to find out more about something called the critical faculty and how it protects you.
Giving away secrets in hypnosis
Another common thing people think is that they’re going to spill out all of their secrets when in hypnosis.
You won’t say anything you wouldn’t normally say. You’re still in control just as you are when you’re “awake”. I say “awake” because hypnosis has nothing to do with sleep and you’re always awake even when in hypnosis!
You see what a mess the world is in regarding hypnosis because of films and stage shows? People have all these silly ideas that are totally false.
How does it feel to be hypnotised?
People experience hypnosis in different ways.
Common sensations include:
- Tingling in your fingertips/toes
- Your sense of hearing improves
- Voices sound distant and close at the same time
- A blissful state of total relaxation
- Your worries and pain can fade away
- Feeling no different to normal
