What does all hypnosis is self hypnosis mean?
You may have heard this in YouTube videos or read it elsewhere but people often don’t explain exactly what they mean by this.
This page will explain what it means and why it’s so important to understand.
All hypnosis is self hypnosis
What this means is simply that you can only hypnotise yourself.
People have the false idea that hypnotists have special powers, learn magic or have studied some secret art.
None of those things are true. All we do is guide you into hypnosis but only you yourself can do what’s needed and enter the state we call hypnosis.
It’s impossible to force hypnosis on someone and they only ever choose to go into that state themselves by relaxing their mind.
A mesmerizing fact
One of the first people to use hypnosis in recent times was Franz Anton Mesmer.
People believed he had magical powers that put them into the hypnotic state. He would wave his hands around making people think he was the one with the power when it was them all along.
No hypnotist has any kind of special power; you hypnotise yourself.
The reason I say he used it in recent times is because hypnosis dates back thousands of years. There are Egyptian hieroglyphics showing people using hypnosis so it’s really nothing new.
Why this is important to know
Sometimes people go to a hypnotist and expect them to do all the work.
They think we will put them into hypnosis, say all the right things and their problem will be gone.
It doesn’t work like that.
Only you have access to your mind and only you can make the changes required. You have a job to do as much as I do.
It’s no good just expecting me to do everything because I can’t.
I can guide you into hypnosis, tell you what to do and help you get rid of your problems. Ultimately it’s you that makes the changes, not me.
You have a role to play and you’ll only get results from hypnotherapy when we work together.
I saw a video where…
A hypnotist goes up to someone and shouts “SLEEP!” and they suddenly go into hypnosis?
It looks impressive but what they didn’t show you was the bit that came before that where they put the person into hypnosis in a more traditional way.
Shouting sleep at someone and yanking their head will only result in the hypnotist entering hypnosis when they person reacts by punching them in the face.
The way this works is by using what we call a trigger. A trigger is when you’re made to feel a certain way or do a certain thing because of something that happens.
Music is the best example of a trigger. What happens when you hear a song that has special meaning to you? You’re taken back to the moment you heard it. You remember the time you were in the car with your friends singing along to it, the day of your wedding or hearing it when you’d just got that letter saying you’d got the job.
When you hear the song you relive those memories as if they were happening now. That’s because your mind can’t tell the difference between the past and the present. The music is what we call a trigger because it triggers those feelings; it makes them happen.
The other part of a trigger is called an anchor. An anchor is the state you go back to such as reliving the happy time. The trigger sets you off and takes you back to the anchor.
You can’t force someone into hypnosis. There’s always more work that has been done beforehand that you didn’t spot, even if you saw it.
All hypnosis is self hypnosis.
What about street hypnosis?
Street hypnosis, stage hypnosis or any kind of hypnosis is still self hypnosis. However you enter hypnosis, you always do it yourself and can always come round at any time.
You may see people in deep states of hypnosis that do all sorts of silly things as people laugh at them. These people could come out of hypnosis at any time they choose. They aren’t being controlled, they aren’t stuck.
They choose not to come out because it’s such a lovely feeling!
I was in a classroom once being used as a demo client. I was in hypnosis with 15 people around me talking about me. The teacher was talking about me and saying what she’d done but it didn’t’ bother me at all.
I was happy in that relaxed state and I was fully aware I could have come out of it anytime I wanted to. I just didn’t want to.
So there you have it
All hypnosis is self hypnosis so don’t worry about anything. You’re always the one in control and you can stop it any time you like.
